First Position is one of those rare films which dancers probably won't want to miss and non- dancers could find surprisingly enjoyable.

I'm surprised it hasn't received national attention and major press coverage- or has it and I somehow missed it? The director of First Position offers a close- up and intimate portrait of a group of young dancers preparing to compete in an elite and potentially life changing competition and wisely steps back and lets the dancers, their instructors, and parents reveal the details of their lives.

It is amazing that some have even had the opportunity to dance. Michaela was adopted from Sierra Leone, miraculously beating the odds to come to America.

Joan Sebastian only sees his parents a few times a year because he has to live in New York instead of Columbia to pursue his dreams. One girl is home schooled so there is more time for dance class, a life which seems very isolated but she is so passionate about ballet that she doesn't appear to mind.

Until watching this film, I had no idea that ballet could cause so many injuries. Pain is taken for granted. I winced when I saw the blackened toenails, cuts and bruises which were revealed as the ballet shoes were removed.

It was a brilliant decision to reveal the daily lives of these dancers and to ramp up the suspense and reveal unexpected challenges as the competition drew near.

By that time, we were rooting for each dancer and holding our breath as they performed in the finals.

I did ballet for four years starting when I was four years old but quit because I was too shy. But I have never lost my love for ballet in terms of the love of the movement, how it shaped my ability to perform in many sports since, and how beautiful it looks to watch.

I can still feel what it feels like to do ballet. This documentary really taps into the competitiveness that I have since developed in other things and that creative need to dance, which I let go so many years ago.

These kids are incredible. I only wish I could come back in my next life and be a ballerina. One person found this helpful. Excellant documentary regarding the competition for aspiring ballet dancers.

The stories and dedication of mostly children, are awe inspiring. The story centers around 6 kids aages who are at this point ready for a competition thats accepts nothing short of perfection.

Little Aron is one such yougster to watch, and the story of Michaela is absolutely heart wrenchhing. If you like ballet you will love this.

I recommend it highly. First of all, not a ballet fan, so I'm not sure what drew me to this in the first place After seeing this film these dancers have it as hard or even harder than any and I mean any professional sports player.

I was engrossed in the small snippets of these kids lives, not characters, real people. All of theses kids are driven and exceptional..

Michaela is a 14 year old from Sierra Leone and adopted by a lovely white older couple here and has seen things no child should.

Rebeccah, the 16 year old very upper class girl from the U. Miko is 12 and her brother Jules is 10, Navy family all over the world.

The most amazing is Aran and 11 year old boy who strikes me as old and wise way beyond his years. I fell in love with each of these children, such remarkable kids.

Very highly recommended. His performance is world class, the only thing lacking is understandably strength in his legs, which will be undoubtedly obtained over time.

I'm completely moved by his performance. His instructor went as far as saying "my life is now complete with Aran". Gaya, as her teacher mentioned, "when she started to perform, she completely changed to an adult", you can feel the intensity from her eyes and body.

Her performance in Wild Horses and Coppelia is almost perfect. The "Cartoon Girl" dance is absolutely breathtaking and great fun to watch.

They have a very bright future for sure. What moves me is that they are also best friends, they are young and funny, Gaya started to dance because of Aran, talk about life long friendship.

The dances from extra are quite amazing, don't miss them. There is a cute Russian girl with a cat or tiger? Highly recommended! I bought this DVD purely by accident as I enjoy ballet as an art form.

From the first viewing, I have been transfixed by the Michaela DePrince story. I have viewed it six times. The only critical I can say about this DVD are the commercials of movies at the front, which come on automatically..

But you can easily use your remote to skip over them by clicking the "next chapter" button seven times.

I strongly suggest you view this film at least once with the director's comments turned on. It lowers the normal audio to a whisper, but it is very interesting as to what Bess says during the whole film.

Of course watch the film first with the normal audio, so you have an idea what is going on, before listening to Bess.

I am saddened by Rebecca Houseknecht's story, but that is life. As she gets children of her own, she may become aware of her selfishness.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This touching film is as moving for the human stories and relationships as for the quality of the dancing performed by the four girls and two boys, competing in the Youth America Grand Prix.

Neither are we spared the heart-break of their mistakes and failures; their handling of tension, stress, disappointment, injury and prejudice;their poor, battered feet and the foot-stretching torture to produce that beautiful convex instep!

However, we are more than uplifted by the sensitive interactions between pupils and teachers and the devotion and unfailing support of both parents.

Skate-boarding comedian, Aran,11,full of joy and passion, has a military Dad based in Italy, where he trains. The father of Miko and Jules approves of the beneficial effects on the family life-style.

Joan Sebastian, although adored and missed he trains in N. The foster parents of Michaela rescued her as an orphan from the civil war in Sierra Leone where her parents and teacher were killed and brought her back to Philadelphia.

They have devoted themselves to fulfilling her dream of becoming a 'delicate' black dancer, inspired by the image of a ballerina she saw on the cover of a dance magazine.

Miko,12, and Jules,10, are driven by their ambitious,Japanese Mum also a competent pianist who pays for additional private tuition.

Her influence has a very good effect on one child but more negative results on the other. She is clearly fulfilling a dream,as is the mother of Joan Sebastian, who describes herself as a 'frustrated ballerina'.

Her influence has a very good effect on one child but more negative results on the other. She is clearly fulfilling a dream,as is the mother of Joan Sebastian, who describes herself as a 'frustrated ballerina'.

Although it was 'weird' for a boy to be a ballet dancer in Colombia, she overcame her qualms. Joan Sebastian himself wants to emulate Carlos Acosta at the Royal Ballet but he also strives for the sake of his parents.

We are so wrapped up in the fortunes of these young dancers that by the time we reach the awards ceremony at the end of the film you are desperate for them to receive a medal, scholarship or contract.

This is an indication of how the clever crafting of this film has worked on you. A captivating dance documentary that can be watched over and over again.

Some of the dancers are now ballet and dance stars of different companies around the world, but here you see them as they train, struggle with injuries and the day to day grind in the hope of forging a career in dance.

Well worth a buy for any young dancer who has not already seen this. I am a ballet teacher and had my eye on this film for a while so, when a couple of my students recommended it I sat down to watch it.

I say 'sat down' but in reality I sat for 5 minutes and then got up and stretched while watching it. You simply can't sit and do nothing while watching these wonderfully talented kids work so hard.

It's incredibly inspiring. You really invest in each story and hope they can all achieve their dream sadly of course, that's unlikely.

I have recommended it to all my students, and funnily enough, some have watched it before coming to class, and then really blown me away with how hard they're working!

Fantastic film. Yet another documentary following young people in a competition. However this is ballet and the physical endeavour is wonderful to behold.

If you are disappointed that the dances at the last stage are cut short, search for them in the extras. Look on the internet to find what the dancers did later.

Joan, Aran and Michaela have done especially well. Five stars. Brilliant observational documentary on the aspirations of 5 young talented dancers.

Every story is different but equally engaging and the access the film-makers had is exceptional. You don't have to be a classical dance devotee which I'm not to be astounded by this documentary.

After graduating from there, Zamora joined the English National Ballet, where he danced for two seasons. Californian Miko Fogarty was sort of what you would expect of a serious ballet-dancer-to-be.

She left traditional schooling to do homeschooling so that she could spend more hours during the day dancing, and her mom was a stereotypically obsessive dance mom.

But all those sacrifices paid off. Fogarty's dancing had a maturity well beyond her 12 years. Since the film, Fogarty went on to win tons of medals, including gold at the Moscow International Ballet Competition, silver and bronze at Varna, and a Prix de Lausanne Award.

She has gained a crazy social media following. Her Instagram has more than , followers. She now dances with the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The gifted Michaela DePrince had a crazy-inspiring story. Born in Sierra Leone, her parents were shot by rebels.

With no one to take care of her, DePrince was put in an orphanage. DePrince had an incredible balance of flexibility and strength, and was clearly going to go far.

Since then, she's taken on several principal roles at the company. And just this month, DePrince was promoted to grand sujet for the —17 season.

As the coronavirus pandemic stretches on, the dance world continues to be faced with unprecedented challenges, but USC Kaufman's faculty and BFA students haven't shied away from them.

While many schools have had to cancel events or scale them back to live-from-my-living-room streams, USC Kaufman has embraced the situation and taken on impressive endeavors, like expanding its online recruitment efforts.

All semester long, they've rehearsed via Zoom from their respective student apartments or hometowns.

And they haven't solely been dancing. A post shared by dancemagazine dancemagazine on Feb 6, at pm PST.
