I am a seventeen year-old girl with a BMI of about 20, a height of about 5′4″, and a weight of about 120 lbs. I exercise daily- I’m a very busy and active person; however, lately I have felt that my eating habits have become more and more unhealthy. Also, I have gained a few extra pounds this winter and have also gained some “baggage” in my lower back/sides. (I would assume these are what we call “love-handles.”)

I would like to begin a health kick. I am not looking to lose a certain number of pounds- in fact, I am not particularly bothered by the exact number of my weight. I just want to feel healthier, and look healthier, too. I live with my parents, obviously, and so I do not control all of the meals that I eat, but if you could give me some sort of an eating “schedule” or “guide” that could help me achieve a healthier being, that would phenomenally helpful! Thank you!!

Complex carbohydrates, unlike simple carbohydrates, are an essential part of any diet including a diabetic diet. These are broken down in the body to produce energy. Brown rice, whole-wheat pasta and whole-wheat bread are some of the best sources of complex carbohydrates.

A diabetic diet also needs to help prevent other diseases and conditions apart from the diabetes itself. Kidney problems and heart disease are just two examples. It is essential to ensure that the diabetic diet does not include too many saturated fats, which could bring on other medical conditions. The body does need some fat intake to function correctly but this can be found in sunflower oil, olive oil, vegetable oil, and other unsaturated fats.

If you are diabetic, there is no reason why you cannot have the majority of the foods that you love. The key is to eat some of them in moderation and increase the healthier foods.
